Royal opening of Medway Park

The Princess Royal officially opened Medway Park in Gillingham.

Her Royal Highness unveiled a commemorative plaque during a visit on Thursday, 28 July 2011 to mark the transformation of the sports facility into a state-of-the-art regional centre of excellence.

Princess Anne, who competed at the 1976 Olympics and serves as President of the British Olympic Association, also took in the opening events of the European Modern Pentathlon Championships, a qualifying event for the 2012 Olympic Games.

The top eight finishers in the men’s and women’s competitions – which will see Europe's top athletes go head to head in shooting, fencing, swimming, riding and running - will earn a place in London next year.

Medway Park was formerly known as the Black Lion centre, before receiving an £11million makeover. The renovated venue now boasts a new 12-court multi-use sports hall, an eight-lane athletics track and a gym. The centre is set to be used as a pre-Games training camp for the Senegal Olympic Squad and the Barbados Paralympic squad.

Visit the Medway Park website to find out more about sports you can take part in - regardless of ability - from aerobics to zumba.
