Adult to child ratios

General child admission policy

In accordance with industry guidelines, and our own risk assessment, we enforce the following policy within Medway Council managed leisure facilities and swimming pools.

All children under 11 years of age must be accompanied by a responsible person, aged 16 years or over, within the facilities for unsupervised activities. For example, swimming, badminton, table tennis, squash etc.

If the responsible person is not participating in the activity, and is only supervising/spectating, then an admission charge will not be applied.

Swimming Pool Admission Policy For Children

In addition to the “General Admission Policy” the following guidance must also be followed for admission to the swimming pools:

Children under 4 years

Children under four years of age must be accompanied in the water by a responsible person, aged 16 years or over, on a one-to-one ratio.

However, one adult may accompany two children under four years of age if they are wearing a suitable buoyancy aid that is “Kite Marked” or carries a BS EN Number. Buoyancy aids accepted under this policy are those that fully support the child's weight in the water and remain secure in and out of the water. For example, armbands or a float jacket.

Buoyancy aids that are hand held - such as floats - are not considered appropriate.

Children aged 4 to 7 years

Children aged four to seven years of age must be accompanied in the water by a responsible person, aged 16 years or over, with no more than two children per responsible person.

One responsible person aged 16 years or over may supervise up to three children aged between four to seven years of age in the Teaching Pool.

Children aged 8 to 11 years

Children aged eight to 11 years of age must be accompanied into the facility by a responsible person aged 16 years or over.

The responsible person is not required to enter the water, but must remain within the facility and supervise the children. If the responsible person will only be spectating then an admission charge will not be applied.

Children aged 11 years and over

No accompaniment necessary.

Family sessions

Family sessions are aimed at families only. An adult must remain in the pool at all times during these sessions. One adult can only accompany up to a maximum of four children.
