Badminton - Stirling

Photo of a shuttlecockBadminton's beginnings go back more than 2,000 years where a form of the game was played in Ancient Greece.

In England, the sport had its origins in a medieval children's game called battledore and shuttlecock in which paddles (battledores) where used to keep a cork stuffed with feathers (the shuttlecock) in the air.

The modern game of badminton, named by the Duke of Beaufort after Badminton House in Gloucestershire, began in the 19th century.

The first set of rules and regulations were published in 1893 by the Badminton Association of England and the All England Open Badminton Championships began six years later.
