Basketball - Stirling

Photo of a basketball netThe modern game of basketball was invented in 1891 by Dr. James Naismith, a Canadian Physical Education teacher from Almonte, Ontario. There were originally only 13 rules and no limit to the number of players which sometimes led to more than 50 people on a court. By 1900, the number of players was limited to five.

In 1904, basketball was played as a demonstration sport at the St. Louis, Missouri, Olympics. It finally became a medal sport in 1936 at the infamous Berlin Olympics, where the US beat Canada 19-8.

Fédération Internationale de Basketball Amateur oversees international competition and estimates that more than 450million people worldwide play basketball.
