Netball - Stirling

Netball was originally called basquette and its creation comes from aPhoto of a netball event simple misunderstanding.

When Dr. James Naismith, the inventor of the modern game of basketball, was asked to send a copy of the rules to Clara Baer, a sports teacher in New Orleans, he sent a drawing of the court with lines on it. Baer thought that the lines indicated that the players couldn't leave those areas and thus was the game of netball created.

Until the formal rules were established in 1960 by the International Federation of Women's Basketball and Netball (www.netball.org/Netball.aspx?id=18), both nine-a-side and five-a-side versions were played.

Although the International Olympic Committee (IOC)recognised netball as an Olympic sport in 1995, there are no plans for it to be included in the 2012 Games.

Visit England Netball for the rules of netball.
