Short mat bowls - Stirling

So the story goes, short mat bowls was played in Wales for the first time in a church hall by two South Africans who adapted outdoor bowls for indoors. When they moved to Northern Ireland, they took the game with them and in 1961 the Irish Indoor Bowling Association was formed.

In 1967, George Dix introduced the game to England, sold mats to local clubs and the game soon spread to Scotland and back to Wales. The English Short Mat Bowling Association (ESMBA) was formed in 1984.

A short mat bowls mat is six foot wide and 45 foot long. Visit the English Short Mat Bowls Association for its laws, rules and regulations.

At The Stirling Centre, short mat bowling sessions are booked by court:

  • Sessions cost £11.20 for members; £7 for non-members during peak times.
  • During off-peak times, sessions cost £4.50 for members; £9.70 for non-members.
  • On Wednesdays, there is a short mat bowling session for OAPs.
