Volleyball - Stirling
Volleyball was invented in 1895 by
William G. Morgan, director of the YMCA in Holyoke, Massachusetts,
by combining the German game of faustball with tennis, basketball,
baseball and handball. At first, he called the game mintonette, but
changed it later to volleyball. At first, the net was only six foot
six inches high.
In 1916, the set and the spike were introduced in the
Philippines and a year later, the game went from 21 to 15
points.
The Fédération Internationale de Volleyball
was formed in 1946.
Volleyball was played as a demonstration sport at the 1924 Paris
Olympics but did not become an official sport until 1964. In 1996,
beach volleyball also became an official Olympic event.
Today volleyball is played in 211 countries and can boast
800million players worldwide.
