Children and young people's library services

Medway Libraries offer a wide range of services for children, young people and their parents or carers. We also offer services for children’s centres, preschools, schools and other professionals working with children and young people. You can also discover the most popular children's and young adult books in Medway Libraries.

Summer Reading Challenge

Children aged four to 12 years are invited to take part in the summer reading challenge

Supported with new books and events in all libraries, children can earn rewards for reading books throughout the summer holidays.

 

Early years

Baby bounce and rhyme

Parents and carers can enjoy knee bouncing, finger rhymes and nursery rhymes with babies up to 18 months old. At these free baby bounce and rhyme sessions parents are encouraged to borrow board books to share with their babies at home. There are no age restrictions for library membership and Medway Libraries does not charge for lost or damaged board books.

Storytime

These free storytime sessions include a wide range of stories and rhymes to inspire children to engage with books. Some libraries offer a craft activity too. 

 

 

 

Pop in and play

Pop in and play sessions take place every Saturday and and are suitable for eight-year-olds and younger. This is an informal drop in chance to meet with friends and families for chat and play within the library.

 

 

Toddler shake and boogie

MaracasThis energetic and fun-packed toddler shake and boogie activity session offers rhymes, songs and movement for preschoolers. Musical instruments, scarves and parachutes are often included.

 

 

 Early years professionals

Bookstart in Medway

Bookstart LogoBookstart is a national programme working through locally-based organisations to give free packs of books to babies and pre-schoolers with guidance materials for parents and carers.

 

 

 

 

Schools and education professionals

Medway Libraries offer a range of services for schools and education professionals. These can include engaging and participatory storytelling, stimulating poetry, bookmaking and library skills sessions.

After school activities

Medway Libraries also runs homework clubs where friendly and knowledgeable staff will be on hand to help with all your homework questions.

 

Chatterbooks

Young girl readingChatterbooks clubs are lively reading groups for eight to 12-year-olds. 

Supported by The Reading Agency, these groups are led by library staff to encourage children to increase their reading confidence and discuss the books they have read with other members.  Activities like craft, drama and games may also be included.

This is also a national Chatterbooks website.
