Friends and volunteers

Volunteer drivers for our home library service

Medway Libraries relies on volunteer drivers to deliver books and other items to people who are housebound. If you are fit and able to lift and carry books, have the use of a car and can spare a few hours per month, please contact Gillingham Library or complete the online form.

Friends of Medway Libraries

Friends of Medway Libraries logoThe Friends of Medway Libraries was formed in 2006 to raise the profile of libraries in Medway. The group meets monthly, alternating between Gillingham Library and Rochester Community Hub. New members are always welcome.  Read the latest Friends of Medway Libraries newsletter (pdf 588KB). To use this file you will need Adobe Acrobat Reader. If you do not have it on your computer, please use our advice page.

The kinds of things members do include:

  • serving refreshments at baby bounce and rhyme;
  • taking books to people who are housebound;
  • helping with library events;
  • promotion stands at school fetes, shopping centres and other public areas;
  • running knitting for charity groups in libraries;
  • running health walks from libraries;
  • supporting readers' groups.

Medway Libraries is organising a dedicated group of friends for Hempstead Library. Friends of Hempstead Library will be working to promote library use within their own community.

If you are interested in joining the Friends of Medway Libraries, please fill in an application form at your nearest library, phone the chairman, Sheila Field, on 01634 811252, or email scfield@blueyonder.co.uk.  Sheila will then explain what we do and invite you to the next event.
