Medway Coaching Academy
Medway's sports coaches and volunteers have a vital
role to play in coaching the local community. Coaching is
central to the development of sport at every level.
The Medway Coaching Academy is a pioneering new scheme to
attract and train new sports coaches in Medway. It has
been awarded an Inspire Mark by London 2012 organisers for the
role it plays in supporting increased participation in sport
as a legacy of the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The academy also provides support for new and existing coaches to
progress in their chosen sport and to broaden their coaching
knowledge.
The Academy creates an effective coaching
pathway (PowerPoint) from unqualified beginners
through to high performance coaches. All coaches are given the
chance to progress in their chosen sport and to broaden their
coaching knowledge through extra qualifications and professional
development.
New coaches
The Coaching Academy offers a foundation course of six modules
in core aspects of coaching knowledge. Graduates are then
encouraged to complete a Level 1 sport-specific coaching
qualification. The six modules cover:
- Key aspects of a successful coach
- Understanding an athlete’s body
- Sports injuries and their prevention
- Preparing for and recovering from sport
- Sports nutrition
- Sports psychology
The foundation modules are devised and delivered by Actifit
Education and all sessions take place at Medway Park.
The Coaching Academy has been awarded the Inspire Mark by the
organisers of the London 2012 Games.
