Mini Youth Games
The Mini Youth Games (MYG) is an annual
programme that involves more than 2,500 primary school children in
a series of inter-school competitions.
Open to every primary school child in Medway and invitational
external schools irrespective of race, gender, ability or
disability, the MYG is an exciting opportunity for children to
experience the thrill of friendly, competitive sport, to learn new
skills and develop a sense of fair play.
Prizes are awarded at each event and points are gained towards
the overall MYG title. A fair play trophy is awarded at each event,
and there is an annual participation prize for the school that
selects the largest number of children to take part in MYG
events.
The MYG in 2010/11 was won by St Margaret's Junior School in
Rainham. The overall series Fair Play winners were Allhallows
Primary School. The Participation Award went to Miers Court Primary
School while Wainscott Primary School were the Best
Placed Small School.
The MYG is supported by the Medway Messenger. To order

Coaching and after-school clubs
Pre-event coaching is an important part of the MYG and also a
way of introducing many children to the skills of a new sport. A
teacher, a parent or a visiting qualified coach may deliver this
coaching and the council's Sports Development Team is keen to
support this, either through providing coach education courses for
teachers and other adults or by using external coaching
expertise.
Where possible, the team would like to offer a limited number of
free coaching sessions to schools entering an MYG event. This
activity need not stop after the event. The team is keen to assist
schools in establishing after-school clubs in new sports.
Community links
There are a great many sports clubs in Medway keen to welcome
new members and build links with local schools. Schools interested
in benefiting from club links should contact the Sports Development
Team to find out about the clubs in their neighbourhood.
The Sports Development Team has published an
online Sports Club
Directory that includes contact details for many sports clubs
within Medway.
