Guided walking tours of Rochester
City of Rochester Society
The City of Rochester Society's popular guided walking tours of
the historic city take place on Saturdays, Sundays, Wednesdays,
public holidays and festival days from Good Friday until the end of
September each year.
The tours begin at 2.15pm at the
Visitor Information Centre in Rochester High Street and take
about an hour and a half. They are an ideal way for both visitors
and residents to get to know something of Rochester's fascinating
heritage during the course of a gentle afternoon stroll.
The City of Rochester Society's guides have been conducting
walking tours of historic Rochester for over 30 years. The route
which is normally followed takes in:
- the Guildhall,
- the bridge,
- the castle,
- the cathedral,
- the Vines,
- Restoration House,
- Eastgate House and
- the Six Poor Travellers' House.
The aim is to give the casual visitor and resident a taste of
what Rochester has to offer and to impart some of its long and
fascinating history.
Tours for organised parties are also available at any time of
the year. A small charge is made for these.
Footsteps in Time
Costumed guided tours are also available. See the Rochester
of Dickens come to life with Footsteps in Time on a walking tour of
the old city, where you can see and learn about the beautiful
buildings the author immortalised in his books.
Some of Dickens' most famous characters, including Nancy, the
"tart with a heart" from Oliver Twist, will escort you
round the Rochester he knew and loved. This is not just a walking
tour but 90 minutes of entertainment and information.
This walk is only available for booked parties and is suitable
