Lost industries

Looking at the area now, it is easy to forget that Rochester and Strood together were once the hub of a number of important heavy industries, some of them world leaders in their field.

Image of the docksLittle remains to tell the story of these industries and the men and women who worked in them. Year 6 pupils from St Margaret’s at Troy Town, a Rochester primary school, have been working with the Guildhall Museum to raise awareness of these hidden histories. They used maps, photographs, books and resources from Medway Archives and Local Studies, as well as studying the relevant objects in the museum’s collection.

Three teams of children each chose to focus on one of the industries active in the area from the late 19th until the middle 20th centuries. These were:

  • the manufacturers of Portland cement
  • Short Brothers
  • Aveling and Porter.
