The Strand project

The Strand, Gillingham

There’s much more to The Strand than meets the eye, and thanks to £49,500 from the Heritage Lottery Fund, we can start to uncover the interesting past of this much-loved outdoor activity venue.

It’s steeped in history going back almost 100 years and was originally developed as a riverside pleasure ground between 1921 and 1926, with additional facilities for holidays at home during World War II.

With the funding, we will be launching a talking telescopes project in partnership with MidKent College. The aim is to preserve, interpret and enhance the heritage and look of The Strand through interpretation boards and talking telescopes which will illustrate the historical significance
of the area. Each telescope will talk to visitors as they look through the lens, playing pre-recorded soundbites from those who experienced The Strand in its heyday, during
the 50s and 60s.

As part of the project, a special themed event will be held which will reflect how The Strand would have been in that era, and allow people to learn more about the heritage of the site.
