Medway Boat Race

Hundreds of spectators lined Rochester's Esplanade on Saturday, 26 May for the inaugural Universities at Medway alternative boat race.

The Leader of Medway Council Cllr Rodney Chambers presented the winners of the Men's race, Greenwich University, with a trophy designed by Chatham-based artist Paula Groves and sponsored by Furley Page Solicitors (www.furleypage.co.uk).

Paula Groves, who designed the Medway's commemorative countdown clock, also designed the women's trophy which was won by the University of Kent. The women's trophy was sponsored by Chatham Maritime Trust (www.cmtrust.co.uk)

The student rowers went head to head on the River Medway and wrote themselves into the history books as the first boat race champions.

The students tackled a 1.62 mile (2.6km) course starting at Cuxton and ending by Hathaway Court, Rochester.

The women’s fours race between Kent and Canterbury Christ Church universities was followed by the men’s ‘eights’ contest between Greenwich and Kent universities.

The race has been organised by the Universities at Medway Students’ Association (UMSA), in partnership with Medway Council.

The race was supported by Olympic silver medallist Alison Mowbray.

Champion rower Alison Mowbray was there to lend a touch of Olympic class to the Universities at Medway Boat Race.

Alison, a member of the British Rowing team for seven years, competed in five World Championships and two Olympic Games during her rowing career, landing the silver medal at the Athens Olympics in 2004 in the Quad Scull event.
