Beijing 2008 promotional team in Medway

An Olympic promotional team from Beijing were in Medway on Friday, 2 March 2007 with the Chinese Minister for Olympic Games promotion to rehearse in preparation for their tour of London and the UK.

The promotional team were in the UK with the official mascots of the Beijing Games, which are designed to promote the Beijing Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Besides Medway, the dancers visited schools, football stadia, the Tate Modern, Piccadilly Circus Station, Millennium Bridge Park, South Bank, Trafalgar Square and Abbey Road.

Beijing will host the Games ahead of London in 2008. The mascots are the official face of the Beijing Games and are affectionately known as the Fu Wa, meaning friendlies. Their names: Bei, Jing, Huan, Ying and Ni, together translate as "Welcome to Beijing".

The Fu Wa were on a world tour to promote the Games and unite the world in peace and friendship through the Olympic spirit.

The Beijing promotional team work closely with Medway's lion and dragon dancing team. Medway's team led the mascots out when they performed at West Ham’s Upton Park stadium on 4 March 2007.
