Commemorative artwork unveiledTo commemorate 23 January 2007 and Medway: 2012 Days to the Olympics, Medway Council commissioned a sculpture that has been installed in the Rotary Club’s sensory garden at the rear of the Visitor Information Centre on Rochester High Street. |
|
The artwork was made by local artist Paula Groves. Paula, who is based at the New Art Centre on Chatham High Street, worked with another local artist, Wendy Daws, who designed and made the motifs that run around the sculpture's Saturn-like ring.
Paula produced the sculpture, which has a base made entirely from scrap metal, to officially kick-off Medway’s cultural programme in support of 2012. This will involve local artists, musicians, dancers and performers of all ages from across Medway.
Other artists also involved in the project are illustrator Mark Barnes and photographer and graphic designer Laura Campion. both of whom are also based at the New Art Centre.

“I was privileged to be asked to produce this artwork by Medway Council to signal the beginning of its cultural aspirations," said Paula. “I think it’s so exciting for an area to be embracing this project with such enthusiasm and involving people from all different sectors. I hope the sculpture can inspire people to support the project and participate in the other cultural activities.” More pictures can be seen in the commemorative artwork gallery |
