Sir Steve Redgrave dinnerMedway: 2012 days to the Olympics on 23 January 2007 culminated with a free firework display and a black tie dinner at the Corn Exchange, Rochester with a keynote address from the greatest name in Olympic history, Sir Steve Redgrave. Sir Steve spoke to the 200-strong audience on the theme of "be inspired". Sir Steve, who was himself inspired by Mark Spitz’s seven gold medals in the 1972 Munich Games, urged Medway’s budding stars in the audience to carry on enjoying their sport and not to lose the intensity and passion they will need to succeed. |

The event rounded off a day when four Olympic sports stars arrived in Medway to support the area’s bid to be part of the 2012 Olympics and a raft of initiatives to increase participation in sport, healthy eating, training and coaching opportunities was announced.
At the dinner the University of Kent at Medway pledged an investment of up to £3million in sporting facilities in Gillingham.
