Michael Baker qualifies for the World Youth Games

Michael Baker, one of Medway's sporting stars, travelled to Holland over the May Bank Holiday weekend, 27-29 May for an international athletics meeting.

During the competition, Michael ran the UK Athletics World Youth (under-18) qualifying standard for the 400m hurdles. The time needed to qualify is 52.5 seconds. Micahel ran a time of 52.35 seconds.

Michael's time automatically qualifies him for the 2007 World Youth Championships, due to be held in Ostrava, in the Czech Republic, between 11 and 15 July. Michael's heat is on 13 July.

The qualification for this event is now Michael's biggest achievement of the season, in a year when he has already picked up the Kent Senior 400m hurdles title, the South of England Junior 400m hurdles title and become Kent Junior 400m champion.

Medway Council would like to wish Michael the very best of luck for the Games.
