Five years to the Olympics

Pull on your trainers and celebrate the countdown to London 2012 by completing the first ever
Medway Mile.

The mass fun run will begin at 7.30pm on Friday, 27 July, five years to the second until the start of the 2012 Olympic Games.

The one-mile course will start and finish at the Black Lion Leisure Centre in Gillingham, the site of ambitious plans to create a regional centre of sporting excellence called Medway Park.

The aim is to get 2,012 people to complete the Medway Mile, proving that anyone can rise to the challenge of running or walking a mile, regardless of their age or ability.

You can run, walk, skip, hop, or jump the course, just make sure you take part.

The mile is being organised by Medway Council’s 2012 team and is the climax of a day of community events to mark the latest landmark date in the countdown to London 2012.

An Olympic Sports Taster Day, also being held at the Black Lion during the day, will give children aged 10 or 11 who live or go to school in Medway the chance to try a range of sports including judo, badminton and table tennis.

Then from 6pm there will be entertainment for all the family during the build up to the Medway Mile. Have a go at activities ranging from cheerleading and baton twirling to judo, rowing, cycling and circuits as local sports clubs and societies demonstrate what they offer and display their skills ahead of the race at 7.30pm. You'll even be able to have your face painted with Medway's 2012 logo.

Medway 2012 manager, Bob Dimond, said: "This is the perfect opportunity for Medway residents to get involved in celebrating the greatest sporting event in the world coming to this country. It doesn't matter whether or not you are a serious athlete, we want this to be an event for the whole community. It really is about the taking part, not the winning."
