National captaincy honour for another Medway athlete

One of Medway's sporting stars has returned from the IAAF World Youth Championships with a new personal best and a captain's armband. Athlete Michael Baker was given the honour of captaining the British team at the championships in Ostrava, Czech Republic, as well competing in the 400m hurdles. The Chatham Grammar School pupil narrowly, missed out on qualification for the final but ran two PB times on two consecutive days, including his first ever sub 52-second time. |

He finished a frustrating fifth in his semi final on Saturday, having come second in his heat the previous day. His time of 51.98 would have been good enough for qualification from the other semi-final race.
The Medway and Maidstone AC runner said: "It's a shame the way the seedings went, but it obviously wasn't meant to be. Hopefully there will be other opportunities.
"I thought I could go sub-52. It's just a shame it wasn't enough."
The event was eventually won by American Wynne Williams in a world youth record time of 49.01 seconds.
