Modern pentahlete James Myatt is embarking on a busy month of international competitions representing Great Britain - against athletes two years older than him. The newly-crowned national champion has been selected to compete for the GB team in the World Youth A Championships in Pretoria. James, who usually competes in the youth B age category for 15 and 16 year-olds, will be spending three weeks in South Africa competing against 17 and 18-year-olds. He is due to return home on 4 September ready for the start of the school year. His selection above his normal age group is the culmination of a successful summer for the young Medway athlete. |
James, 16, was recently crowned national champion for Youth B after his success in the five events of running, shooting, fencing, horse riding and swimming at the National Modern Pentathlon Championships in Somerset.
Last month he was also part of the GB team that came third in the European Championships in Las Palmas, the first ever medal won by Great Britain in the competition. James finished 21st individually, competing in the swim, shoot and run.
Before heading out to South Africa, James will be competing in the European Pentathlon Youth A Grand Prix in Stockholm, from 10 to 12 August.
James is one of Medway's Elite Athletes, receiving financial and medical support from Medway Council and the University of Kent at Medway to help them fulfil their Olympic ambitions at London 2012. Find out more about the Elite Athlete Support Programme
.James is the second elite athlete in a month to compete in a World Youth Championships. Michael Baker was the Great Britain captain at the IAAF World Youth Championships, held in Ostrava, Czech Republic earlier this month.
