Olympic coach nominated for Pride in Medway award

Martin Laws is employed to make people jump for joy. And now the tramplining coach may have his own cause for celebrating after being nominated for a Pride in Medway award.
Martin is the managing director of the Jumpers Rebound trampolining centre, Gillingham. More than 1,500 athletes train at the centre every week. With the 2012 Olympic coming to London it is hoped that the Jumpers Rebound Centre will be home to a pre-Games training camp. Much of the centre's good reputation is down to Martin's successful coaching career. Photo of Olympic athlete Gary Smith and his coach Martin Laws
He took Medway Olympian Gary Smith to seventh place at the Athens Olympics in August 2004 and has coached many local athletes to national and international finals. His expert coaching has seen members of Jumpers make county, regional, national and world records. Martin travelled to China in April to coach athletes at the world championships. He hopes to return to China in 2008 with Gary for the Beijing Olympics. He was nominated for a Pride in Medway award by his wife Liz. She said: "I decided to nominate him because of his tireless efforts to improve the sport of trampolining, for his valuable work supporting local athletes and for his work with the Olympic committee."
Pride in Medway logo Martin was stumped for words when he heard he had been nominated. He said: "I'm always vocal about the good work people do at Jumpers, but when it comes to talking about myself it's a bit harder. "This is an honour and a privilege, not only for me but for the centre. The whole operation is based on team work. It is like a family and my colleagues should be rewarded as well." The awards are sponsored by the University of Kent at Medway, Medway Council and mhs homes, and supported by the Medway Messenger.
