Elite athlete wins VIP trip to World Athletics Finals

Champion hurdler Michael Baker has rounded off another great season by scooping a national outstanding athlete award.

The recent GB team captain at the World Youth Championships was chosen ahead of dozens of other talented youngsters from across the country to receive the SPAR Star Award.

The panel of judges from UK Athletics deemed him the athlete most deserving of the all-expenses-paid prize trip to the World Athletics Finals in Stuttgart, which take place at the end of September.

Michael, pictured with mum Jan, dad Mick and sister Charlotte at the award presentation, will be joined by his coach June Pews on the trip to Germany.

The idea is for him to experience what it will be like when he is ready to start competing in major senior international championships.

The award rounds off a successful summer for the 17-year-old Chatham Boys Grammar pupil, who finished second in the England U20 Championships and took gold in the South of England U20 Championships, competing against runners up to two years older than him.

He went on to be selected for the World Youth Championships in Ostrava, Czech Republic, where he set a new lifetime best of 51.98 seconds - ranking him third on the GB all-time under 18s list.

Michael is a member of the Medway 2012 Elite Athlete Support Programme and competes for Medway and Maidstone AC.
