Modern pentathlete does GB proud

James Myatt was part of a confident Great Britain squad that competed in the World Youth A Championships in Pretoria. The competition, which lasted from mid-August until early September, attracted the world’s best modern pentathletes. |

James, who usually competes in the Youth B category for 15 and 16 year-olds, was selected for the three-man squad and went up against athletes two years older than him.
The competitors took part in five events: fencing, swimming, riding, shooting and running. Competitors scored points for each event which counted towards a grand total for all five events. James’s highest placed finish came in the fence where he finished 25th, although he achieved most points for his swim, an event in which he finished 41st.
Overall James came 30th, a very credible performance in his first World Championships and at a higher age group than the one he ought to compete in. James's British boys team finished sixth overall, a good result for such a young team. The British girls team won a silver medal, narrowly beaten to the gold by the team from Germany.
James was the second Medway athlete to compete at a World Championship event in the summer of 2007, after Michael Baker captained the GB athletics team at the World Youth Games held in Ostrava, Czech Republic in July.
