Trampolining star selected for October's World Championships squad

Gary Smith is preparing for a return to the world stage after being selected in the Great Britain squad for next month's World Trampolining Championships.

Gary, who came seventh in the Athens Olympics in 2004, secured his place in the squad with a winning performance at the last of three national trials event, held in Loughborough on Saturday, 15 September.

The Gillingham Jumpers star will be competing in the men's individual event at the championships in Quebec, aiming to make a mark ahead of next summer's Beijing Olympic Games.

A top 16 finish by any of the British team will secure a place for one Team GB competitor in Beijing. Gary, who was the top British male qualifier for the World Championships, will be hoping to maintain his number one position and make it to his second consecutive Olympics.

The 26-year-old said: "I was really pleased with my routines. Some were the best I've done all season."

Gary, from Chatham, trains at the Jumpers Rebound Centre in Gillingham, where he is also a coach.

Fellow Gillingham Jumper, Jason Plowman, has been named as the reserve for the GB team for the Double Mini Trampoline event at the World Championships.

Gary Smith and Jason Plowman are both assisted by Medway 2012 through its Elite Athlete Support Programme.
