Medway athlete in Olympic Hopes event in Poland

James Myatt, Medway's GB modern pentathlete, was in action in the Olympic Hopes event in tournament.

The event was made up of an international field including competitors from Russia, Hungary and the Czech Republic, some of the strongest nations in the sport.

The Great Britain team suffered an injury setback when Steven Mason, one of James' team mates, couldn't compete because of a foot injury. This left James and Bradley Dixon, from Yorkshire, to fill the spaces left by Steven and compete in events more than once.

James was the top British competitor finishing in eighth position.

James' performance in the Olympic Hopes competition rounded off a fantastic year for the Medway athlete.

He began the year by becoming national champion. He then competed for Great Britain in the European Championships held in Las Palmas. He competed in the Youth A category, a level above where he should be competing. The team won a bronze medal at the event, the first medal ever won by a Birtish team at this level.

James then flew to South Africa where he competed in the World Youth A Championships. He finished in 30th place overall, a very creditable performance in his first World Championships and at a higher age group to the one he ought to compete in. The British team finished sixth at this event, a good result for such a young team.

James is one of Medway's elite athletes and receives support through the Medway 2012 Elite Athlete Support Programme.
