Medway Olympian Gary Smith has announced his retirement from international competition.

The decision comes after he failed to win a spot at the 2008 Beijing Games.

"It has taken me ages to make my decision," said Smith.

"I am still training a bit and might decide to come back to competitions in the future but for now I need a break."

Smith, a member of Gillingham Jumpers, competed in the 2004 Games in Athens, where he finished seventh.

Gary first represented Great Britain at the age of 20, competing in the Olympics, the World Championships and the European Championships.

His top international performances include a team third at the European Championships in 2002 and 2004 and a team fourth in the 2005 World Championships.

Gary is a senior trampoline coach and will continue to work in the sport. He would like to thank his coach, his club-mates and everyone else who has supported him and followed him during his career.

Medway Council would like to thank Gary for putting Medway sport on the map. He has been a magnificent ambassador for sport in Medway, capped by his brilliant performance at the Olympics.
