Medway's Callum Fowler wins World Championships silver medal

Medway elite athlete Callum Fowler was part of the Great Britain under-18 ice hockey team that finished as runners-up in last month's 2008 World Ice Hockey Champioships.

The 16 year-old, who competes at a higher age group, featured in every game of the division B tournament and won the player of the match award in Great Britain's 5-3 victory over Romania in the qualifying stages.

The final of the tournament pitted Callum's Great Britain side against Hungary. Great Britain took the lead through Tom Squires, a goal which was set up by Callum. However, Great Britain were unable to hold on to their slender advantage and conceded goals in each of the three periods.

Following the 3-1 victory, it was Hungary who gained promotion to the under-18 IIHF division A where they will face the best teams in the world at under-18 level.

Despite defeat, the future looks positive for a Great Britain side with a number of players who will still be eligible for the under-18 age group next year.
