James Lewis wins national championship

Medway elite athlete James Lewis has won his first national judo title in front of a packed house in Cardiff. 15 year-old James, who is currently in Year 10 at school, won the Under 66kg British Schools' Championship for all fighters in Year 11 or below. On his way to victory, James had to climb out of a tough group, winning all his fights by submission. He then went on to defeat last year's champion in the semi-final before claiming the title with a winning score of nippon after successfully throwing his opponent on his back. |

“Winning has made me more confident about myself and my judo. I know I can beat the other top GB fighters and go on to be the best," said a delighted James.
Following his victory, the Chatham Grammar School pupil is now concentrating on his GCSE studies and his forthcoming examinations. He fits these studies in around training four nights a week with Rainham and Medkwai Judo Clubs.
James, who is part of the British Judo World Class Start Squad, is also on the Medway Elite Athlete Support Programme.
