Medway Business Games table tennis

Medway’s business community enjoyed another serving of sports action during the latest event of the 2008 Medway Business Games.

After an afternoon of hotly-contested matches, Medway Council eventually took top honours.

This, the third event of the Medway Business Games programme, featured 13 teams representing eight local companies.

The tournament was held on Friday, 25 April at the Howard Table Tennis Centre in Rainham, one of the country’s leading table tennis training facilities and one of five Medway facilities approved as a pre-Olympic training camp venue for 2012.

The companies represented included Kent Reliance Building Society, HSBC and mhs homes, which were all leading the charge in the overall 2008 competition, going into the third event of five.

Each team comprised two players who took on representatives from the other companies in singles matches. Their combined performances were used to calculate the team’s overall position in the tournament.

Dick Tolhurst from Medway Council and Tony Nunn from HSBC emerged victorious in the two singles tournaments, while it was the Medway Masters team of Dick Tolhurst and Dave Gracey representing Medway Council who pipped their council colleagues the Medway Marauders to the overall tournament trophy.

Guest of honour Harry Lumb, Medway’s 13 year-old England junior table tennis player who trains at the Howard Table Tennis Centre, presented the winners with their trophy and prizes.

HSBC’s third place means they leap to the top of the 2008 league table after three events. Medway Council move up to second place, four points adrift, while KRBS and mhs homes also remain in close contention.

The Medway Business Games are organised by Medway Council’s 2012 and Sports Development teams. They form part of the Medway Games programme to engage the whole community in organised, competitive sport as Medway continues its countdown to the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The next event is a golf tournament on Friday, 30 May at Deangate Ridge Golf Complex. The grand finale will be a netball tournament on Friday, 27 June at Rainham Netball centre.
