Countdown continues to the Medway Mile
There's just over a week to go until Medway's big annual Olympic countdown event - The Medway Mile: Medway Gets Active.
The free festival of sport takes place at the Black Lion Leisure Centre in Gillingham on Sunday, 27 July, offering free sport galore for all ages. |
The event will also see hundreds of people - from babies to pensioners - complete the second annual Medway Mile fun run.
Among those signed up for the fun and games is the Clifton family from Gillingham, looking forward to trying some of the sports on offer and walking the mile.
Mum and Dad Katie and Neal will be taking part with six year-old Helen, three year-old Polly and two year-old Flora.
Katie explained: "I'd love to say we were quite a sporty family but we're not. I just thought it was a lovely thing to do as a family."
The event takes place four years to the day until the start of the London 2012 Olympic Games. There is free swimming all day, including a family inflatables fun session from noon. The afternoon is a chance for the whole community to try a huge range of sports including track and field, hockey, judo, tennis, scuba diving, basketball and ice hockey, all for free. |
Human table football, beach volleyball, hula-hooping and an Army assault course will be among the less traditional activities also on offer during the afternoon.
In addition to the activity have-a-go sessions indoors and out, Medway's club runners will contest three elite races from 3pm.
It will then be the turn of the mass runners and walkers to complete the mile at 4pm. The Medway Mile is organised by Medway Council and supported by the Medway Primary Care Trust. It is free to enter and every participant receives a free souvenir t-shirt. |
