Medway Sports Awards 2008

It is time to celebrate the latest achievements of Medway’s sporting stars.

Nominations have opened for the fifth annual Medway Sports Awards, the only celebration of sport covering the whole Medway community.

England women’s rugby vice captain Rachael Burford and England boxing captain Jordan Dennis were among a host of top sportsmen and women recognised for their individual and club achievements at last year’s glittering ceremony.

The awards also honour the commitment and dedication of the coaches and volunteers involved in sport in Medway, with categories including coach of the year, unsung hero and lifetime contribution.

New categories for 2008 are awards for the primary and secondary school of the year for Physical Education (PE) and school sport.

Rachael Burford, twice Medway sportsperson of the year, has this year celebrated another Six Nations Grand Slam with the England women’s rugby team.

She said: “Having your home town behind you and supporting you all the way is the best support you can get in sport because it’s true and real. To have the support of friends, family and the local community makes all the hard work so worth it.”

Jordan, 2007 junior sportsperson of the year, added: “I’d had a good year and it was even better for winning this award. I was up against some of the best in England in their event, so it was a great achievement for me to win.”

The Medway Sports Awards are organised by Medway Council’s Sports Development Team and sponsored by the Medway Messenger and University of Kent at Medway, with additional support from Hempstead Valley Shopping Centre and Greenacre School Sports Partnership.

Medway Council Community Services Portfolio Holder, Cllr Howard Doe, said: “Medway has some very successful sportsmen and women who we are extremely proud of. The awards are a great way of celebrating their achievements and highlighting the commitment and dedication of the coaches and club members that make their successes possible.”
