Win the chance to fly the flag for Medway

The world’s biggest celebration of sport is underway in Beijing and when the curtain falls on this year’s Olympic Games after two weeks of competition, it will be London’s turn to become the official host city. Medway will join towns and cities across the country in celebrating the official handover on Sunday, 24 August 2008 by raising a special commemorative flag at Rochester Castle and one lucky competition winner will play a key role in Medway’s ceremony. The official Olympic handover takes place during the closing ceremony of the Beijing Games, when Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, will receive the Olympic Flag from the Mayor of Beijing. At the same time, communities across the UK will be raising a special commemorative London 2012 flag as part of a national handover day party. |

Medway’s event, Flying the Flag for Medway, will see the flag transported along the River Medway by boats crewed from the Royal School of Military Engineering in Brompton.
They will land at Rochester, where the flag will be marched along the jetty and handed over to some of Medway’s 2012 hopefuls.

The flag will then be paraded by a succession of Medway’s young elite athletes, Medway’s 1964 Olympic silver medallist, Paul Nihill MBE, and by the winner of the competition, which is being run in conjunction with the Medway Messenger (www.medwaymessenger.co.uk) The Mayor of Medway, Cllr David Carr, will also carry the flag before it is taken to the top of the castle and raised on the flagpole. |
Cllr Howard Doe, Medway’s Portfolio Holder for Community Services, said: "This is a landmark date for Medway as we continue our countdown to 2012 and we hope the whole community will share in this national moment of celebration.”
The flag-raising ceremony will take place at 2.30pm in Rochester Castle Gardens and is being organised by Medway Council’s 2012 team.
See this week’s Medway Messenger for full details of how to be in with a chance of parading the flag on handover day.
