Medway International Sporting Ambassador Danny Crates led Team GB in to the Bird's Nest stadium for the opening cermeony of the Beijing Paralympics. Crates, the current Paralympic champion over 800m, has been battling injury over the last year but stepped up his training recently and was given the all clear to compete in his third games. He arrived in Macau on Sunday, 24 August, the same day that Medway marked the Olympic handover with its Flying the Flag event. It was there that he got the news that he would be leading the team into the stadium and carrying the Union Flag. |

Defending champion Danny is part of a Great Britain team of 206 athletes in Beijing to compete in 18 of the 20 Paralympic sports.
The 35 year-old world record holder made his Paralympic debut in Sydney in 2000, winning a bronze medal in the 400m.
He then made the switch to 800m for the Athens Games and four years later won the gold in a time of 1:57.89.
Great Britain will be looking for a top three position in the medal table after finishing second in the previous two games.
Everyone in Medway wishes Danny the best of luck in his pursuit of Paralympic glory.
