Shaunagh Brown in search of first international medal

Medway elite athlete Shaunagh Brown has been selected for the England squad to compete at the 2008 Commonwealth Youth Games.

She will compete in the discus and the shot put at the games being held in Pune, India. The competition is being used as a test event and a forerunner to the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi.

Shaunagh goes into the competition looking for her first international medal in an event that doesn't feature the nations which traditionally excel in women's throwing events. She has been training hard, knowing a throw near her season's best of 49.67m should be good enough for a medal.

It has been a good year for Shaunagh who competed for Great Britian in this year's World Junior (under-20) Athletics Championships in Poland after successfully making the step up from World Youth (under-18) level. She also won the Under-20 AAAs in Bedford with a throw of 48m.

The Commonwealth Youth Games work to a slightly different timeframe and Shaunagh, who recently turned 18, can compete at the under-18 level for this event.

She flies out on 7 October 2008 for the Championships which begin on 12 October. She will compete in the shot put on Wednesday, 15 October and the discus on Thursday, 16 October.

Medway Council wishes Shaunagh the best of luck for the event.
