New register launched for sports volunteers

A new programme is being launched in Medway to encourage more people to become sports volunteers.

The 2012 Volunteer for Sport project allows people interested in helping out at sports events and with clubs to register their details with Medway Council's Sports Development Team.

With the 2012 Games just around the corner and exciting projects, including major sports events, coming to Medway, there are more opportunities than ever to get involved in volunteering.

Medway will be hosting the Modern Pentathlon World Cup in 2010 at Medway Park, creating opportunities for hundreds of volunteers to rub shoulders with international athletes.

The newly-expanded Medway Games programme and other one-off tournaments and events such as the annual Medway Mile also require the support of an army of volunteers.

Volunteers on the new register will be notified of event opportunities and placements for gaining sports development experience. They will also be able to access sports-related training courses.

Medway Council's Sports Development Officer, Tina Martin, said: “Volunteering in sport can be a fantastically rewarding experience and this is an exciting time to get involved in sport in Medway.

”We can offer our volunteers nationally-recognised training courses and make sure they know about all of the opportunities open to them.”

Medway 2012 manager Bob Dimond urged people to sign up today. He added: “Tens of thousands of people will be hoping to volunteer at the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

“But volunteers in Medway don’t need to wait until then to be involved in a global sporting event, because we have the Modern Pentathlon World Cup to look forward to, as well as the other exciting volunteering roles right here on our doorstep.”
