Hailstones and hockey at Holcombe

Hempstead Junior School is celebrating victory in the second Mini Youth Games (MYG) tournament of the year.

More than 200 children from 21 schools braved wind, rain and even hailstones to compete in the hockey competition at Holcombe Hockey Club on Wednesday, 1 October.

And after a day of hard-fought competition on the hockey pitch which saw each team play 10 matches, it was the team from Hempstead Junior School who emerged as champions.

Close behind them were runners-up Featherby Junior School, Gilllingham, while the third place was taken by Miers Court Primary School, Rainham.

The best-placed small school award went to Deanwood Primary Education Technology School, Rainham. Every team received points for their school for taking part.

A major focus of all Medway Messenger Mini Youth Games events is on participation and sportsmanship, and the team from Allhallows Primary School, Rochester, were presented with the fair play award.

Medway Council Sports Development Officer John Hatchett said: “There was a very friendly atmosphere and schools participated in a co-operative spirit of competition.

“It is crucial that young people are introduced to sport in a friendly, positive environment and that they are encouraged to accept victory and defeat with equal grace.”

The Medway Messenger Mini Youth Games is a multi-sport programme of events run through the school year for all Medway primary schools.

It forms part of the Medway Games series and is organised by Medway Council’s Sports Development Team with the support of national governing bodies, local sports clubs and leisure facilities. Prizes are awarded at each event and points are gained towards the overall Mini Youth Games title.

Wednesday’s event was supported by staff and volunteers from Holcombe Hockey Club, Anchorian’s Hockey Club, Greenacre School Sports Partnership and Howard School Sports Partnership.

The next MYG is the Mini Netball tournament on Thursday, 16 October at the purpose-built netball centre at Rainham School for Girls.
