Commonwealth bronze for Shaunagh

Medway elite athlete Shaunagh Brown capped off a great summer season with her first international medal.

The 18-year-old discus thrower from Gillingham grabbed bronze in the women's discus at the 2008 Commonwealth Youth Games held in Pune, India.

Shaunagh's throw of 42.96m was shorter than she expected to throw but enough to secure one of England's 41 medals, 13 of which came in athletics, and contribute to the team's third place finish on the medal table behind second-placed Australia and hosts India.

Shaunagh also finished fourth in the shot put, missing out on a second bronze medal by 17cm after a throw of 14.07m.

The bronze rounds off a good year for Shaunagh who also competed for Great Britian at the World Junior (under 20) Athletics Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland in July and for her club, Blackheath and Bromley Harriers at the European Champion Clubs Cup in Serbia, where she also picked up a bronze in the discus.

"I'm so pleased to have won my first medal at international level. I was a bit disappointed with the distance I threw but it's been a long season.

Shaunagh is supported by the University of Kent at Medway through Medway's Elite Athlete Support Programme.
