James Myatt set to put season's troubles behind him

James Myatt, Medway's modern pentathlon star, is training hard for the 2009 season after injury and illness cut his 2008 season short.

In his first official season at Youth A (17-18) level, after competing in many Youth A competitions including the World Championships in Pretoria, when at Youth B level, the 17-year-old from Rochester was looking to make big strides against the world's best athletes in this age group.

The season got off to a good start with James being selected for the Italian Open Tetrathlon where he was the top British boy in ninth place and part of the British team that took the silver medal. His progress led to his first selection for the senior British team for an international meet in Slovakia in early June where he finished 15th. Following this and selection for the Junior World Championships in Cairo and the Youth A Europeans in Sweden.

Just as his season was beginning to live up to expectation illness prevented James making the final in Cairo in a competition for athletes in the age group above Youth A. Then on the flight home he perforated an eardrum which forced him to miss the summer's European Championships in Sweden.

After recovering from his perforated eardrum James tore his bicep and was unable to train for a few weeks. This resulted in him only going to September's Youth A World Championships in Bulgaria as the team reserve but he was able to compete in the team relay which was valuable experience at this level.

James has now put all these troubles behind him and is back training hard to make sure he makes the most of the 2009 season.
