Tornadoes Korfball Club has won the British Korfball Association Club of the Year award after a tremendous season.

During the 2008/09 campaign the club's under 11, under 13 and under 16 sides all became national champions in their relevant age categories and the club was awarded Clubmark status (www.clubmark.org), becoming only the second korfball club in the country to do so.

Tornadoes coach Dave Buckland was awarded the coach of the year prize making it a very successful awards night for the club.

The awards evening was built around the British Korfball Association season finale.

The weekend-long event features the top teams from across the country who qualify for the event via their league finishes. Tornadoes selected a number of junior players for the tournament who were drawn against more experienced teams from Norwich, Cardiff and Manchester.

They lost the match against Norwich but won the other two to set up a semi-final against Nomads Korfball Club from Sutton. Nomads had pipped Tornadoes to the South East League title which made the game a tense affair. Nomads demonstrated their edge over the Tornadoes once more, running out 8-6 winners.

The tournament was not over for the young Tornadoes players who faced a third-place play-off against Croydon. After taking a 4-0 lead the team from Medway were pegged back to a slender one goal lead. However, under the expert leadership of Dave Buckland, the young players regrouped before extending their lead and winning the game 10-4.

Club Chairman, Richard Woodham said: “To receive the Club of the Year award and for Dave Buckland to receive the Coach of the Year award, is a true testament of the commitment, dedication, passion and willingness to create and maintain a structured korfball environment for players of all ages and abilities.

"We truly believe that time spent in the beginning will pave the way for those who wish to progress through the sport to a higher level."
