Hundreds compete in inaugural Medway 10km run
|
Hundreds of runners took to the streets of Medway for the inaugural Town and Gown 10km run, kick-starting Medway’s Armed Forces Day celebrations.
The Muscular Dystrophy Campaign run started and finished on the Great Lines in Gillingham. Supporters lined the route to cheer on the runners as they made their way through Chatham Historic Dockyard and St Mary’s Island.
The event, on Sunday, 21 June 2009, marked the start of a week of celebrations and events in Medway to mark National Armed Forces Day and attracted a strong field of competitive and fun runners.

After a dramatic sprint finish it was Rainham’s Mark Laing who was crowned the inaugural winner in a time of 38.49 minutes, one second ahead of runner up Robert Whittaker. Mark, a keen road runner, said: “It’s always a big thing to have a 10km, and it was an interesting course, going through the Great Lines, the Dockyard and St Mary’s Island.” The first female home was Jacqueline King, 37, from Rochester, in a winning time of 44.58 minutes. The Istead and Ifield Harrier added: “This is the first time the event’s been here so it’s good to come out and have a go.” |

The Medway Town and Gown 10k is only the second event of its kind run by the charity in the country, joining its counterpart in Oxford, which has been staged for the last 27 years. Event organiser Anne Jackson said: “I’m really pleased with how the event went. I’m really thrilled that we finally did the Medway Town and Gown and it will undoubtedly grow from here.” The event raised money for the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign (www.muscular-dystrophy.org/), the leading UK charity focusing on all muscle diseases. |
