Welcome to Medway

Medway is situated in the Thames Gateway and is the largest conurbation in the south-east outside London, with a population of more than 250,000.

It is an area with a rich cultural, naval and literary heritage, boasting beautiful landmarks including Rochester Cathedral and Castle.

Medway is known around the world for its links to the great English author Charles Dickens, who grew up in the area. In 2012, Medway will celebrate the 200th anniversary of Dickens' birth.

Medway was a former Naval base, and teams training in Medway can enjoy a visit to the world famous historic dockyard, and view Chatham's Napoleonic defences, which are bidding to become a world heritage site.

A wide-ranging festivals and events programme means Medway has much to offer tourists and teams basing themselves here for training and 2012 preparation. Visit What's On Medway.

Getting to the Games

By 2012, Medway will be only 30 minutes by train from Olympic Park in Stratford.

Passengers will be able to join a train at Rainham, Gillingham, Chatham, Rochester or Strood stations and travel on a new line to Ebbsfleet.

At Ebbsfleet the train will pick up the new high speed line and travel on to Stratford in 11 minutes. It is estimated the overall journey will take around 30 minutes.

Medway has excellent national and international transport links by road, rail and air.
