Medway 2012 and Contacts

The Medway 2012 campaign was launched on 23 January 2007, 2,012 days before the start of the London Games.

It has two clear objectives:

Who?

Medway Council has a small team dedicated to working with council collegues and other partners to maximise the benefits of the Olympic and Paralympic Games for the people. View the contact details for the Medway 2012 team.

What?

The work of the Medway 2012 campaign focuses on the following core areas of activity:

  • Business and skills

  • Pre-games training camp

  • Communications

  • Schools and education

  • Culture

  • Sports development

  • Games

  • Visitors and transport

  • Health and fitness

  • Volunteering

Since the campaign launch on 23 January 2007 there have been many key achievements that will secure a lasting legacy from the Games.

At the heart of Medway's Olympic and Paralympic legacy planning is Medway Park, the £11.1m project to create a centre sporting excellence on the site of the Black Lion Leisure Centre in Gillingham.

Medway is already reaping the benefits of the investment by government, the University of Kent, Sport England and the council.

The Modern Pentathlon World Cup is being staged at Medway Park in April 2010.

The centre has been approved as a pre-Games training camp for 13 Olympic and eight Paralympic sports and will be hosting the Paralympic Association of Barbados ahead of the 2012 Games.

It is also the new home of national league basketball team, the Medway Park Crusaders (www.kentcrusaders.co.uk/).

Most importantly, it is providing the people of Medway with one of the best community sporting facilities in the country.

Olympians and Paralympians past and present have thrown their support behind Medway's 2012 ambitions, including Steve Backley and Danny Crates, who have both become international sporting ambsassadors for Medway.

Counting Down to 2012

Medway's signature event to mark the annual countdown to 2012 is the Medway Mile.

This event takes place each year on the date the Games will begin in 2012: 27 July.

Thousands of people of every age ability run or walk one mile to celebrate the countdown and commit to getting active.

Medway has also hosted a raft events as part of the London 2012 Open Weekend, a nationwide sporting and cultural festival held annually on the weekend immediately before the 27 July anniversary date.
