James is a member of the British Triathlon Development Squad. He is currently ranked 14th in Great Britain in the 17-19 age group. At the age of 18, he is competing against older athletes and wants to push on to secure a top 10 place before moving up to the next age group.

James began competing in triathlons at the age of 15 years when he was selected for the south-east triathlon squad. Since then he has moved into the British Development Squad and had his first year at national competitive level in 2005.

James won the South East Biathlon Championships and came second in the National Biathlon Championships in 2005. Following this, he was selected for the British Junior Development team and has continued to be selected since. The squad selection is based on trials held at Loughborough every October.

In 2006 James improved greatly in all aspects of triathlon, especially in cycling. He competed in his first national junior championship, finishing in the top 20 and later that year he won the Men's Sussex Championship.

At the development squad level, James competes in triathlons comprising a 750m swim, a 20km bike race and a 5km run. However, James also competes in men's senior events and recently competed in Scotland, finishing 40th in a full international field.

James' immediate goal is to break in to the national top 10 and compete for Great Britain in a full international event.
