James has made great progress since moving to Loughborough University and training in an elite environment.

James is a member of the British Triathlon Development Squad and was part of the squad that went to the 2008 under 23 World Championships in Vancouver, Canada.

In 2008 James competed in the National Junior Championships where he finished a disappointing eighth place after getting off to a bad start. James won his age group's National Aquathlon Championships, finishing fourth overall, and also finished 11th in the National Senior Sprint Championships.

James began competing in triathlons at the age of 15 years when he was selected for the south-east triathlon squad. Since then he has moved into the British Development Squad and had his first year at national competitive level in 2005.

James won the South East Biathlon Championships and came second in the National Biathlon Championships in 2005. Following this, he was selected for the British Junior Development team and has continued to be selected since, successfully making the step up to the World Championships squad in 2008.
