Why apply for the Medway half price bus fare scheme?

My name is Sam Day. I am 16-years-old and live in Medway. As a typical teenager, I have places to go and people to see. Unfortunately, as a typical teenager, my parents aren’t super heroes. They have jobs and lives of their own so it’s unrealistic to expect them to drive me everywhere. The other option is obviously public transport, which is where the problem of so many young people starts.

People who don’t get Education Maintenance Allowance and who are too busy with schoolwork to hold down a job, like me, find it difficult to afford regular use of buses. In an average week I might use buses around five times, to go to my friend’s house after school, to go to the cinema at the weekend and to go to Bluewater or Chatham for a shopping trip, for example. It all adds up and I might end up forking out more than £15 per week on a mixture of buses and taxis to get me places.

When I heard about the half price bus fares scheme I was instantly interested. It’s free and it saves you money, so there’s no drawback to getting involved. The money you save on buses using this scheme really adds up, and you will find that you use public transport more and become increasingly independent.

All kinds of young people can benefit from the scheme. All it takes is for you to fill out a quick form and then you can start saving your money as soon as the papers come through. It’s definitely worth getting in touch with the council and getting a better deal for buses.
