My time with the Liberal Democrat Group
Nicholas Bearham
When I inquired about work experience with the Liberal Democrat Group, I’ll be honest; my intention was to improve my UCAS personal statement. But while on work experience I have realised how interesting and varied work is. I have been involved in many things, such as: media monitoring, drafting press releases, reading council reports and I attended a cabinet meeting. I have learnt loads of new things.
I have met many different people from different departments so I have a better understanding of how the council is set up. Some of the people I met included:
the communications manager;
the overview and scrutiny co-ordinator;
the cabinet co-ordinator;
the chief executive.
I now feel that I understand more about the council and what it does. I really enjoyed the talk I had with the chief executive as we discussed what was in store for Medway and the changes that the council intends to make. As for the cabinet meeting… well it wasn’t what I expected! It was more technical than I thought it was going to be and a lot of abbreviations were used as well!
I have enjoyed my time with the Liberal Democrat Group and through my work experience I have gained a lot more than just the ability to improve my UCAS personal statement. I feel I understand more about the world of politics and local government.
