Essentials
If going to uni means leaving home then there are a few essential things you need to know to keep you protected and on the right side of the law.
TV Licence – if you decide to take a tv to uni with you, you will need to get a tv licence. You’re no longer covered by your parents tv licence so if you’re living in halls you will need to get a licence for your own TV (communal tv’s provided by the uni will be covered by the university’s tv licence).
Did you know….?
As you won’t be there for a full year, you can claim money back for the summer months that you’re not using your TV. You can only claim back full quarters (3 full months).
It’s best to get this sorted straight away. But remember, TV licences can only be issued once the term has started, so you can’t do this before you go.

Insurance – if you’re living away from home, you’ll need to get contents insurance to cover all your belongings in your room. You might think you don’t need insurance but student housing (whether it’s halls or rented houses) is a target for burglary. If you don’t have insurance you probably won’t be able to replace any items if they are stolen. Do some research online and you’ll probably be able to find cover which doesn’t cost too much, but it will depend on what you take with you to uni.
Top tips:
Photos – take some passport size pictures of yourself. You’ll need these for things like library cards/union cards etc.
Bank accounts – if you are thinking of setting up a student bank account, why not see if you can set this up before you go? It’ll save you queuing up for hours with everyone else.
