Genital warts
What are the symptoms?
Lumps on or around the vagina, penis, scrotum or anus. Some of these are small and difficult to see, especially if they are inside the vagina or anus. Others are much larger and more easily detected. There are many different types of genital warts. People who have genital warts may have an increased risk of contracting genital cancers.
How could I get it?
Warts are caused by a virus and are highly contagious. Transmission is only by direct contact with other warts.
Can it be treated?
Genital warts are easily treated with a lotion. They may need to be removed by freezing or burning. Early treatment is usually more effective and highly recommended. Even after treatment, it is possible that some virus may still remain under the skin. This may cause symptoms to reappear but it does not necessarily mean you have been re-infected.
Can I prevent it?
To prevent the spread of the genital wart virus, avoid direct contact with warts by using male or female condoms.
